Tanith of Gold 07
Frederick chuckled, “We never spoke about Geometry and yet he was the most important teacher I could have had. He initiated me into the path of light. He showed me that I am a light bearer and I have an important role to play in this world. There are forces of dark at work to preserve the eternal balance. He showed me how to use my power in a fitting manner. This universe is full of demons in the guise of humans. I fear that our Holiness has been claimed as a servant and is unleashing a war of blood on innocent people. There are mighty souls - people who would shine like an incandescent sun if we could only see. These people are in danger and yet I cannot begin yet another war to save them. It may be that their time on this earth is at end. I must find ways to counter the dark.” He walked to the window and stared out for a moment.
“I have received word that my invitation to Michael Scot has been favourably received and in return he has brought me news of a staggering secret that some of the Cathars have with them. Michael Scot will meet you in Narbonne. He will come back with you to teach at my new university. Tanith will protect you as your personal guard, and of course you have the most formidable Captain and crew in the whole of the Mediterranean. I want you to go because Michael Scot has in his possession some important scrolls which I want you to verify.”
Rowan felt a shiver of apprehension. The legendary Michael Scot was a consummate wizard and scholar. Stories of his magical feats and alchemical marvels were known throughout the world. He could make large objects appear and disappear before audiences. He was greatly feared and revered.

The mission
Michael appeared at the door, still looking quite dazed and abstracted. After a moment's glance at Tanith and a quick bow, he appeared quite unable to look at her so she paid attention only to the King as he gestured them towards the well-laden table. Portia placed her soup and big twists of fresh bread in front of them. The King became silent and then, looking at Tanith, recited a brief verse in Persian. She caught her breath and intoned the corresponding verse. He passed his hand over them all in a wide arc and immediately began talking in Greek, while he ate. His mood was serious as he spoke and he waited for them to digest the news before he continued.
He had three days ago, while engaged on a tour of the island, received a message which had occupied most of his thoughts since then. A reliable scout of his had brought unconfirmed news.
'As you know, His Holiness, “ he pronounced the title with only a slight trace of irony, “has been turning his attention to the so-called heretics in Languedoc. The Cathars are honourable and peaceful people but they are a threat to his expansionist plans. He wants to rule the world and thus has sold his soul to the dark lord.” Frederick's tone was light but his demeanour was serious. He turned to Michael. “I want to talk to you on a subject we have never approached all the years I have known you. You remember my Geometry teacher, who gave me all those extra lessons, starting when I was twelve years old.”
Michael nodded, “Yes, of course. The old man - the Muslim cleric who lived next to the market. I always wondered though why your Geometry never improved though.”
